In the period from 11th to 17th of April four photo students from Hannover and five students from Košice’s Arts Faculty have met in Košice along with two Docents from the Arts Faculty and the Robert Bosch manager.
In the beginning there was an introductory seminar on the premises of the Faculty of Arts to discuss the work approach of the participants and the themes of the project. The approach of both parties was different, while the Hannover team was more oriented on documentary and journalistic photography; the Košice team was more artistic and abstract. But these contrasts produced a very fruitful cooperation in the end. Both parties agreed on the following topics: Sindi and Roma, Socialist architecture, Art and culture in Košice and Religion in eastern Slovakia.
From Tuesday to Friday the students were doing research on their topics in groups. They visited the Roma district Luník IX, Roma theatre Romathan, different artists from Košice, religious communities and also the communistic blocks in different districts in the city. In addition, some students took trips to towns of Prešov, Bardejov, Svidník to vistit religious communities and Roma settlements.
On Sunday evening, 17th of April, the flashlight group made a presentation of their works in Kasarne Kulturpark (www.kulturpark.sk). The public was very active and got impressed by the different and external views on the topics from Hannover students, particularly on the Sindi and Roma topic, because it attacked some prejudices towards these communities. Visitors and participants found the exchange project very stimulating and profitable and it was agreed to do another workshop in Hannover. The German students even stayed another week in Košice to continue in their work with the local photographers.
The results of the workshop are shown in the Kasarne until mid-May and also on the blog: www.kosicehannover.wordpress.com.
